Aitutaki Activities
Activities in Aitutaki revolve, not surprisingly, around the beautiful lagoon. Many activities do not operate on Sundays, as the Aitutaki community reserves this day for church-going activities only.
Water-based activities:
- Swimming and snorkelling in the warm, crystal clear turquoise lagoon.
- Kayaking in this vast expanse of lagoon, and explore small motu.
- Scuba Diving in oceans around Aitutaki with its abundant marine life. Aitutaki diving is an experience not to be missed. Contact Aitutaki Scuba or Bubbles Below.
- Deep-Sea Fishing suitable for novices and experienced anglers alike.
- Lagoon Cruises make perfect half-day or full-day trips with snorkelling and picnic lunch on a motu.
Island picnics are a favourite, especially with Cook Islands honeymooners who can be whisked away to an uninhabited island that is the epitome of truly tropical romance. Sunset cruises are also popular as the wide open marine landscape provides breathtaking sunsets.
On land activities: There are, of course, many on island activities. The main island of Aitutaki rises to 123 metres, so is not steep for exploring on foot or by bike. The highest point Maungapu offers a good photo opportunity so don't forget your camera.
- Rental bikes are available.
- Golf - contact the Aitutaki Golf Club to play on the island's 18-hole golf course. Clubs for rental around NZ$10.00 and green fees around NZ$10.00
- Visit old Christian Churches made of coral rock and lime, reflecting Aitutaki's conversion to Christianity by missionaries in the 1800s.
- Another interesting place to visit while on Aitutaki is the Ministry of Marine Resources where you can see giant clams and baby sea turtles. Open weekdays only. Learn more about the marine life in the Aitutaki lagoon.
- Enjoy a local coconut oil massage.
- Go for a horse-back ride.
- Chat with locals in the bar - or watch (join in?) a local game of rugby.
- Participate in an Island Night, with Buffet-style Feast and Polynesian hula dancing performances.
In the southern central region of Aitutaki island there are some interesting historical Polynesian stones, worth a visit also. These are volcanic rocks placed in formations - known as marae - such as The Te-Poaki-O-Rae (the stone of Rae).
The main resorts have on-site activities and a tour desk to help with pay-for trips and tours. Smaller lodgings can advise on what trips to take. Tour operators on Aitutaki include Paradise Island Tours, Bishops Cruises, Kit Kat Cruises, Circle Island Tours, Nane & Chloe Tours, Aitutaki Scuba, and Deep Sea Fishing with Don Wat.
